Then you wait. And sometimes you wait and you wait. You begin to wonder if your network has forgotten all about you. Youre tempted to reach out again, but you know theres a fine line between being a go-getter and being annoying. fruchtwein of us arent in the position of looking for jobs all of the time, so that line can be difficult to see.Amanda Marko has networked her way into every job in her career. Today she is president of Connected Strategy Group. I asked her how to keep a job search that is important to you, but not as important to others, front and center without being a bother.SH When is it OK to use a mass email?AM Ive seen people in my network use mass emails to great effect. To work, they need to be short and to the point. Only do it once and I dont just mean once per job search I m ean once per decade. These messages are fruchtwein effective when the circumstances are that you suddenly lost your job, especially in a way that others are going to know about, such as mass layoffs or a business closing. Your network will hear the news and wonder if you were affected, so jump at the chance to ride the wave of their goodwill.Be specific about what youre asking for and be sure to include your resume.I once received an email from someone in my network who has a massive network himself. He probably emailed a few hundred people and the message he sent welches long and rambling. It included his varied past experiences- and they were very varied- and his future hopes and dreams, which were also varied and abstract. He welches in a career transition and was reaching out for help, but I could not make sense of what he actually wanted and needed.Dont play the mass email card mora than once or you risk looking pathetic.SH What about personal emails?AM Personal messages should be your preferred method of contact. Keep it short. Use the persons name and be sure to inquire about something personal, recall a project that you worked on together, or retell an inside joke. Doing do will stir emotion and make the person youre asking for help mora inclined to go out of their way for you. They will be reminded why they like you. Then you can ask them for something. Be specific. Are you asking for a reference, a referral, a lead, an introduction, some ideas, moral support? Whatever it is, make it clear and make it easy for them to give it. Attach your resume onto every message.SH Personal contact is better, right?AM A face-to-face meeting makes you more memorable and your needs more clear. Its also harder to say no or ignore someone right in front of you. Buy coffee. Stop by the office. Meet for an after-work drink. Its time well-spent. Its also going to be a longer conversation than an email or phone call. During the course of it youll have a chance to tell your story, make an emotional, memorable connection, and you can use the time to brainstorm together.During one such meeting the person I was with abfluged the conversation by saying I dont have anything to offer you. By the end, he had given me three solid leads and a couple of pieces of memorable advice. Our being together gave him time to gain a deeper understanding of my needs and he left with that knowledge and was able to identify concrete ways to help me.SH It seems like people are using the phone less these days, right?AM Hello? When did we start only making pre-scheduled phone calls? In a job search you need to stand out. Do the unexpected. Dial a phone number and ask to speak to a person. Yes, you might catch them at an awkward time, in which case, schedule another call. But you might catch them in the car, or standing in line, or just after theyve had a conversation with someone who mentioned that they have a job opening on their team. Its a risk, but its one worth taking.SH S o how do you follow up on all these efforts without being a pest?AM Follow up, but give it a pause. Persistence is good, especially for a job seeker. But temper your persistence with the reality that your job search isnt top-of-mind for anyone in your network. If youve already left a message and havent heard back, dont take it personally. But also dont take it as permission to keep them on speed dial until you receive a response. Give people in your network the benefit of the doubt that they genuinely want to help you. Maybe your first attempt caught them at a bad time or they just forgot.Ive been guilty of this myself when I was on the other side of the phone call. More often than not, Ive been thankful that the job seeker gave me a gentle nudge when Ive failed to follow through.When Im the job seeker, my formula for successful follow-up looks like thisI send an email immediately after meeting someone to thank them and recap the meeting. That makes it easy for them to hit reply and follow through on whatever they promised- contact information for someone, a link to a job listing they saw, etc.If I need them to do something like make a virtual introduction, I compose a short copy-and-paste message that they can send. I ask to be ccd on their message, and I assure my contact that I will do all the follow-up they dont have to stay in the loop once the virtual introduction is made.I attach my resume to this message.However, if four to seven days pass and I havent heard back, then a one-line email, with the original email below is my next move. My resume is also attached to this message. It usually works.If I still dont receive a response, then my options are drop it or find another excuse to contact them like congratulating them on some news or forwarding a useful article. The best sales person I know gave me the recommendation that if I find another excuse to contact them, dont mention the job. They already know dont bring it up, he said. Theyll help if they ca n. If they cant right now, then let it be and keep the relationship on good terms. Dont make it awkward in the future by constantly reminding them that they dropped the ball.SH How can you be the kind of person whom others want to help?AM If youve influenced someone, they will help you. There are two ways to increase your influence. First, lead with a story that creates an emotional connection. Reveal your passion and your humanity to our network, and they will feel compelled to help you.Second, pay it forward. Always seize opportunities to increase your job search karma and, in the process, your influence. You must do for others all the things you are asking your network to do for you. Expect to give 10 times more than you receive. Dont just go to your network with your hand out. Have something to offer them. Find out what your network needs from you and facilitate introductions, make travel recommendations, refer a good landscaperwhatever they need. You will be remembered and ofte n rewarded for it.SH Gratitude goes a long way, and it gives you an excuse to stay in touch with people, doesnt it?AM Along the way, thank everyone. Handwritten thank you notes should be sent every time someone goes out of their way for you, takes time to meet, etc.At the end of your successful search, thank everyone again- even those that didnt help you and ignored your carefully timed, polite messages. Thank those who gave you leads that didnt pan out. Thank those who gave you a lead that led to the lead that that led to the job. Thank those who supported you emotionally. A mass email announcing your exciting new role should include a heartfelt thank you. Gifts are also called for at times. When I was searching for a job overseas, I sent vintage champagne to the friend who gave me the lead.SH Youve talked a lot about the human touch.AM Spending your days rewriting your resume and your nights researching companies isnt the only want to job search. Get out of the house and be visibl e. If you zulauf into people from your networks at social events, youll have the chance have an impromptu face-to-face meeting. Getting out will also keep your spirits up.SH Because no one want to help a whiner or complainer.AM Even if it goes against your nature, stay positive. Most everyone in your network has been touched by the economic woes of the last six years. Possibly they or a family member have lost a job and been in your job-searching shoes. And most everyone has felt the increased stress from the threat of job loss. Youre not the only one looking for a job youre one of millions. So dont remind your network of the stress and bad times of their past or that they fear will be in their future.Negativity is a turn-off. Dont reveal your frustrations, disappointments or fears to anyone but your closest confidantes. To your network, you should radiate positive energy, enthusiasm and resilience. Is Professionalism Subjective Is Professionalism Subjective Professional: of, relating to, or characteristic of a profession. Profession: a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation. So from the looks of it, a profession is a calling. This is rather interesting and a point to take note of as I’ll surely come back to this. Now when we think of being unprofessional, specifically in the workplace, an array of things come to mind. Let’s take a look at the most obvious: Being rude to customers, colleagues and/or superiors (although the latter could result in job termination). Using profanity and crude language when speaking to customers and/or colleagues. Comments and/or jokes that can be considered offensive - those pertaining to an individual’s race, gender, religious affiliations or sexual orientation. Verbal arguments and physical altercations. Tardiness and extensive absences. Sleeping on the job (In June, 8 TSA officials were fired for this). Being loud or obnoxious while working; constantly disturbing others. Dressing inappropriately with too loose or too tight clothing. Looking unkept, disheveled and messy. Similarly, an unorganized and cluttered workspace can show signs of unprofessionalism as well. Gossiping and telling lies. A list of “how not to act” could go on and on. Yet, I wonder what happens when you become more specific and the professionalism line isn’t as clear. For example, is it unprofessional for a person to display his or her religious beliefs while at work? Many people put quotes and/or phrases on business cards and email signatures. What happens when they delve into religion? Is it suitable to include a scripture from the bible or a verse from the Quran on your business card, or is this practice now unprofessional? During my junior year of college, a professor told me I should remove the scripture I had in my email signature because, as a journalist, you’re supposed to be neutral. My email’s signature was unprofessional. She was partially correct; journalists are supposed to be neutral (although that is unrealistic because everyone has biases), but although I was a journalism major, I was not nor desired to ever become a journalist. Still pertaining to religion in the workplace, what about praying over, giving thanks or “blessing” food before consumption, as many religious practices encourage? It is unprofessional for someone to do this when in the company of others? Say during a meeting, conference or company gathering? I also wonder where the line is drawn with unprofessional appearance. There is an unspoken rule about how an individual should look in the workplace. What about culture-specific attire including headpieces and colorful garments? And hair colors such as green, blue, orange and purple are most often considered unprofessional, but are they truly? Numerous tattoos and body piercings send red flags for most employers, but others may not deem them unprofessional. We discovered earlier that a profession is a calling, or something deep inside that pushes us in a certain direction. I believe we all have a specific calling; for some it is to teach, and for others it may be managing a group of people. If our profession is our calling and answering this call makes us a professional, then our day-to-day actions as a professional produce professionalism. What did I just say? The bottom line is that professionalism isn’t black and white, but it varies in color. To be professional depends on the environment we work in; the culture of the New York Stock exchange dictates the company’s professionalism standards. The same is true for the Walt Disney Company, yet both would have totally different concepts of what it means for employees to be professional. Appearance, cultural and religious practices, interacting with customers and co-workers: Although there seems to be a common belief on what is and is not professional in these areas, in reality, the deciding factors fluctuate. We focus on what we can see and what we can see is confidence rather than competence. Charisma rather than humility. And narcissism rather than integrity. In all those three qualities, men over-index compared to women. They are not substantial differences, but they aggregate. On average, we mistake masculine qualities with leadership potential and therefore in effect, men get rewarded for these things that don’t really contribute to leadership effectiveness, but they seduce us. They are the traits that seduce people, and that’s why men, one of the reasons why men get to the top quicker than women, more often than women.When women display these features, which is less frequently, we actually don’t celebrate them as much. We don’ t like women who display a lot of confidence, who display charisma-like behaviors, and we don’t parade them when they are narcissistic.”You wrote about the lack of career obstacles for incompetent men. How so?“There are other ranges or a series of obstacles that should be in place â€" but are not â€" for men. They have to do with behaviors like taking credit for other people’s achievements, blaming others for their own mistakes. When most decision makers are male, it is natural that they will prefer to deal with males and hire males because people hire in their own image. That in itself is a narcissistic tendency.You like those who look like you because it’s a socially acceptable way of loving yourself. And I’m not saying that why there is sexism in society or the glass ceiling don’t play a role, it all plays a role, but historically people have not emphasized enough how much these personality characteristics influence our choices of leaders without really driving effe ctiveness.”Something related: You wrote about the myth of charisma in leaders. Why do we put so much importance on charisma? And why do we link it to what equals leadership?“It’s because we have an inability to actually detect or judge actual competence well. Charisma is like the power of brands. When you don’t know much about a product â€" it could be a handbag, a restaurant, music, a movie â€" you just default on the big brands. ‘Okay, I will trust this because I can see that it’s a recognizable brand.’Charisma is something that we instantly attribute to others. Most of the factors that predict charisma, whether people are seen as charismatic, have nothing to do with leadership potential. They have to do with whether people are attractive, whether they are powerful, whether they display some superficial social skills like making eye contact or using the right kind of body language, so they seem to have a presence.So we default on that because it’s very easy to judg e and in a way we’re lazy but we’re also aware of the complexities of actually focusing on leadership potential. Today, most people pick a president based on who they would rather have a beer with.The alternative is to actually sit down, do a lot of work, and try to really think about who has the best plan, who can manage others, who is most knowledgeable, what are the policies they propose and all that is very complex and we just want to watch TV and keep up with the Kardashians.”You wrote that among leaders, the women generally outperform men. How?“The data on this comes from studies that look at how leaders affect their teams and particularly what impact different leaders have on the performance of their teams. The leadership style that helps teams or followers the most is transformational leadership. It’s a leadership style that is based not on having power and authoritarian or authoritative command but on establishing a connection with your followers, where they trust you and you’re able to persuade them to align their values and attitudes with you. More often than not, this style is displayed by women.Conversely, men tend to display more absentee leadership, which means they basically don’t manage. They leave teams without direction, without guidance and they are busy, presumably politicking or managing up rather than down or when they are more hands-on in their leadership style, they are more often autocratic or authoritarian, dictatorial. So several stories have shown that women tend to have teams that are more engaged, so they are more enthusiastic. Morale is higher in teams managed by women and that even by kind of consequential performance indicators like revenues, profits, women tend to surpass men in their performance.Now a lot of the times the counter-argument is like yeah but that’s just sampling bias because since it’s harder for women to become leaders, those that become leaders are better. The standards are higher, which is possibly true. For example, even if you look at Fortune 500 companies, on average, women have to be more qualified than men to have the same position and much more qualified than men to have the same position and get paid as much. But the solution is not to make it easier for women to become leaders and in effect lower our standards when we select women, but it is to apply the same quality control standards and raise our standards and have better criteria when we select men, so that we’re better able to vet or screen out incompetent male leaders.”Do you envision any solutions for leaders both male and female in the future?“First of all, I think it’s important to understand that although gender is correlated with all these things, the issue is really not fundamentally about gender, but it’s about our inability to select on talent or potential …Instead it’s much easier to select the right people and look for the qualities that make people better leaders. Especially when they don’t usually make people leaders, that is focus on competence, focus on humility, and focus on integrity and if you do that which by the way, some organizations do it more than others and we can see that they are more successful because they have more meritocratic systems, less toxic political cultures, and higher levels of revenue, net promoters score, profitability, etc.So I think the big challenge is that organizations need to accept that first, they are not as meritocratic as they pretend to be because nepotistic cultures and toxic politics stand in the way of meritocracy and secondly that today you can’t play it by ear. You can’t just trust your instincts and say okay I’m going to interview this person. ‘Oh, great culture fit. I like them. Great. Come in.’ Then simultaneously you’re spending money on conscious bias training. Overcoming Fear - Conquering Anxiety at the Job - The Muse Overcoming Fear - Conquering Anxiety at the Job The more I work with clients, the more I am convinced that some of the worst things that happen to us in the workplace are of our own making. When I say that, a couple of specific examples come to mind. For example, consider my client Liza, who tolerated her mistakes being publicly called out by her manager and was terrified to confront him about it. And there was Mason, who almost quit a job because his boss never followed through with a commitment to give him a raise and promotion. Then, there’s Teresa, who was overwhelmed in a new job and assumed she’d made a big mistake by accepting the role. Each one of them was in severe pain- pain so bad they were ready to walk away from what were frankly great jobs! The pain of those situations kept them frozen in one of the biggest workplace adversaries: fear. Liza was terrified to confront her manager. She told me she didn’t think she could get through the conversation without crying. Mason was indignant about not getting a promised raise but was scared to bring it up. After all, what if his boss said, “Oh, sorry; we really don’t think you’re worth it after all.” And Teresa felt wholly inadequate. She feared being perceived as an imposter; that she must not be as competent as the person who hired her thought she was. In each of these examples- and probably many that you can cite in your own career- fear kept people from taking action. Psychologists say that when we are in a state of fear, we compromise our ability to process thoughts and events rationally. Our brain wants to protect us by sending us in a direction away from the pain point. And Freud’s “pleasure principle” suggests that in almost everything we do, our mission is to avoid pain. Think about it: When you’re in pain, are you likely to take a risk confronting a manager? Asking for that big raise that was never mentioned again? Or go tell a new boss you need help in a new job? Heck no! In all these situations, the natural reaction is avoidance. Quit now! Cut and run! Pull up the covers and hide! So, how do you climb out of the fear morass and start taking steps to resolve these situations at work? Here’s an easy three-step plan. Step 1: Analyze the Fear Did you know that as humans, we are innately wired with only two fears: the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling? Those fears are programmed into us to keep us safe and have been passed down through generations. What that means is that all of our other fears are learned fears. They’re triggered by life experiences that stimulated fear at some point, and now, when we’re in similar situations, that learned fear is invoked again. If you really want to disarm your fear, name it. Get it out of the closet. Hang it out to dry. Research shows that when we bring our fears into the light of day, we can start making that fear extinct. To start shining a light on your fears, get out a journal and complete these sentences: I’m afraid of: (for example, getting fired from my job.) This fear is caused by: (insecurity that results from not getting validated with praise or recognition.) As a result of not dealing with this fear, I am: (completely stressed, not sleeping, and gaining weight.) If I take constructive steps to address this fear: (I will have a much higher quality of work life.) Once you identify what fear is holding you back, you’ll have an easier time taking action to release it. Step 2: Make a Plan With Exposure Therapy Techniques When psychologists work with patients to overcome the fear of say, spiders, they do so by taking gradual small steps. First they show them a picture of a spider. Then, they put the person in the room with a spider. Next, they touch the spider with a feather, then with a gloved hand, then a bare hand, and finally they hold the spider. It’s a process called exposure therapy This type of therapy rewires your brain around the fear you have and allows you to move past it. You can do the same with your workplace fears, sans feathers and gloves. In Liza’s case, we identified three actions she could take. First, she could ask her manager for a weekly meeting, since it’s hard to address a big issue without any other ongoing communication. Then, she determined that the weekly meeting agenda could include both a recap of her accomplishments and a discussion about where she needed help from her manager. This would engage them in a mutually supportive conversation. Finally, she could include a designated time to exchange feedback in that meeting. This would help open a healthy avenue for sharing feedback with her manager, where she could work toward addressing the issue of being called out in public. By using concepts from exposure therapy, you can drop the ultimatum-making (“I’ve got to quit that job”) and instead, design your own exposure therapy regimen to confront your fear and take action. Step 3: Execute In all three of these situations, we were able to design plans to help the employees overcome their fears- and once they acted on those plans, they were able to resolve the issues. When Liza conducted structured meetings with her manager, she was able to bring up her concern about being called out publicly for making mistakes. Once her manager was aware of her concerns, they were able to work together to develop a more effective solution. Mason resolved the raise and promotion issues after confronting an executive who was known for big promises and virtually no follow-up. And Teresa realized she had a lot more leverage in her new job than she thought, and she learned to use it to her advantage to get much more strategic visibility in her new job. All much better results than succumbing to fear and running away. Look at what’s keeping you paralyzed in fear at work. Analyze that fear and use exposure therapy techniques to develop a plan and take action to resolve the situation at hand. It’s not a comfortable process, but you’ll be surprised at what’s on the other side. Just ask all those people who used to be terrified of spiders. As a matter of fact, if I’m not at least 90% confident that I’ll be remotely decent at something, I’m not even going to bother trying my hand at it- and definitely not in front of other people. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll attempt it in the comfort of my own home without others there to witness my inevitable failure and resulting embarrassment. But, more likely than not, I’m simply going to walk away and write it off as something I simply wouldn’t be good at. I know I can’t be alone in this- I assume most of us feel this way when faced with something we’ve never tried before. So, I was relieved to find this insightful article by Thomas Oppong that reinforced my belief that we all deal with this limiting self-doubt. Oppong provides an incredibly encouraging message for everyone- but it resonates especially strongly with perfectionists like myself.
